Incarnate Word Catholic School offers a rigorous curriculum utilizing diverse teaching strategies for high student engagement. We place a strong focus on developing higher order thinking skills for all students. Incarnate Word students score above the national average on standardized tests and are regularly accepted into their top choice high school.
Incarnate Word Catholic School offers a full-day Kindergarten program. A first semester 1/2 day option is available as well. Our students learn in a setting which includes whole groups, as well as small groups and individualized instruction. All our Kindergarten through 2nd grade classrooms are assigned an aide to assist the classroom teacher.
Primary students' reading instruction include Wilson Foundations to learn phonics. Kindergarten focuses on turning spoken words into writing and 1st and 2nd grade use phonics and decoding in small and large group instruction. All grades learn to find detail, draw conclusions, compare and contrast, determine cause and effect, and put the story in sequential order. We use the Sadlier math program to begin adding and subtracting groups of 10 with hands on activities, as well as with mental math in Kindergarten and by 2nd grade can add and subtract 3-digit numerals with regrouping along with other skills.
As students get older, their reading classes incorporate the study of genres and the gift of reading for pleasure. Students learn to discuss books by using terms such as plot and character development, as well as formulating and writing their own opinion within the study and then supporting it in their own writing.
Grammar begins in the primary classrooms and continues through 8th grade. Students understand how sentences are constructed and this information not only helps with their writing, but is a benefit when they go to high school and learn a 2nd language.
In grades 6-8 students can participate in a challenge math class so that in 8th grade they are ready to take an Algebra class.
